Samuel H. McCarver was born 25 May 1842 in Highland, Jackson Co., TN, where he married about 1861 Mary A. Richardson and the following year their only child, Sidney S. McCarver, was born.

This was the time of the Civil War and having reached the age of 20, Samuel McCarver, enlisted at Livingston, TN, in Co. G, 25th Tennessee Infantry Regt. CSA, where he was elected Lieutenant in the company commanded by his cousin, Captain Leonidas A. McCarver. By the 13 April 1862, Samuel himself was promoted to Captain of Co. B and would have seen action at Perryville, KY, in Oct. 1862 and at the Battle of Murfreesboro, 31 Dec. 1862. He was again promoted 25 April 1863 to Major and served in Johnson's Brigade under General Longstreet in the East Tennessee campaign.

Johnson's Brigade was next despatched to Richmond, VA, where they arrived about 12 May 1864 and were given the task of guarding the southern approach to Richmond at the location of Drewry's Bluff, which is also in close proximity to the defences of Petersburg.

At the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, 16 May 1864, Sam McCarver was killed while in the lead of the 25th Regiment in an assault on the Union forces field works where hand to hand fighting had ensued. About 1870, Mary McCarver remarried John Sneed and to this union there were at least five children who were brought up alongside her son Sidney.
