    Humphrey Barnett and his wife Elizabeth of Craven County, Camden District South Carolina, to JOHN DARWIN of same, 15 October 1782, 300 acres along the north side of Broad River and adjacent to lands of Elizabeth Young, originally granted to ZACARIAH BULLOCK on 28 April 1768 by Gov. William Tryon of North Carolina and transferred to GEORGE COWAN, then to ROBERT LOUGHRIDGE, then to HUMPHREY BARNETT. Witnesses William GILLHAM, Denis DEMPSY, Arthur DUDNEY, William YOUNG.

    • Title was further secured (perhaps following full payment on the mortgage) in the 1786: Barnett - Darwin Land Lease/Release.

      The 'George Cowan' referenced in chain of title is almost certainly the father of Mary Cowan, wife of John's brother James.

      The Grantor, Humphrey Barnett, was also one of John Darwin's commanding officers during the Revolutionary War in South Carolina (see John Darwin's Pension Application)
