10 June 1773: James Overton's List - Trinity Parish
Central Louisa County, boardering St. Martin's Parish,Includes in household of "SAML. DICKARSON" with (white male) thithables "THOS. DARWIN, WILLIM. ZACKARY, NATHL. HARRIS."
No 'Thomas Darwin' is known; this may be a mistranscription for 'Jesse Darwin.'
1775: James Dabney's List - St. Martin's Parish
Includes "CHARLES DICKERSON : Nat, Easter, JOHN DARWIN Ovsr. 4"
Davis' notes explain "overseer" can represent someone managing a farm on behalf of a tithe-payer resident outside the Parish; "4" here represents the "combined white and black tithables," in this example including slaves Nat and Easter (Esther).
1776: Samuel Ragland's List - St. Martin's Parish
Assessment of William Darwin is for one only-—himself (women were not tithed), suggesting Jesse was living elsewhere (perhaps, as the 1775 tithe list might suggest, as a hand on Samuel Dickerson's farm).
1778: St. Martin's Parish
William Darwin assessed for 8 tithables—which we cannot at present fully explain. His son John had been discharged at Valley Forge in February and did not migrate to South Carolina until October; he may well have been part of his father's household at this time. And perhaps one of William's daughters with family was also residing there. |
